The hardware fund
One fund, one goal. Give any amount, or nothing at all. Andesite SMP is free to play on, and it stays that way.
A faster machine of its own
A Minecraft server does most of its work on a single processor core, so how smooth it feels comes down to how fast that one core is. Right now Andesite SMP shares older hardware with other things, and the live map, pre-generating the world and Distant Horizons all compete for the same processor. A modern machine of its own gives it far more room.
£40 raised of £1,000
Any amount helps, and nobody has to.
Where the money goes
The parts, with today's rough prices. They move, so these are ranges.
| What | Approx. cost |
|---|---|
| CPUAMD Ryzen 5 9600X | £140 to £260 |
| MotherboardB650M micro-ATX | £100 to £130 |
| RAM32 GB DDR5-6000 (bought used, memory-tested) | £200 to £280 |
| Storage1 to 2 TB NVMe SSD (the world is 108 GB and growing) | £80 to £150 |
| Cooler, PSU, caseTower air cooler, 550 W Gold PSU, micro-ATX case | £85 to £150 |
| Total | About £750 to £900 |
Why £1,000 and not £900
The extra is a cushion for three things: payment fees (around 3%), prices changing (RAM nearly tripled in price this year), and replacing a used part if one turns out to be faulty.
Running costs, about £15 to £20 a month
Every gift goes to the machine first. Once it's paid for, a smaller monthly goal starts for these. Until then I cover them myself.
- Electricity for a server that's on day and night: about £150 to £200 a year.
- DDoS protection for the server's address: £3.97 a month.
What backers get
- The Backer role on the Discord.
- A name colour in chat.
- /hat, to wear any block or item on your head.
- Your own join line, in place of "joined the game".
- One suggestion in the draw to name the new machine. Every suggestion has the same chance.
- Your in-game name on the backers list below, and a Backer tag on your member page, if you'd like them there.
- Anything else will be cosmetic only, and optional.
It's the same whatever the amount.
What money never gets you
- Gear or items.
- Claim blocks.
- A rank with extra abilities.
- A faster application.
- A say in the rules.
Donations never buy a gameplay advantage. That's Mojang's rule for servers, and ours.
If the goal isn't reached, or we go over
- Short of the goal
- The money stays ring-fenced for the hardware, and the build waits until it's covered.
- Over the goal
- The extra goes to running costs, and their monthly goal starts.
- When the goal is met
- The parts get bought, the server moves onto its own machine, and the fund closes.
Donating is entirely optional. Everyone gets the same server either way.
Thanks for reading this far. Whether you chip in or not, I'm glad you're here.
